Yesterday, in response to one of the account’s Tweets teasing then-upcoming Gamescom info, a user stated “I WANT MORE GUYS.” This, in turn, received the response “Did you just assume their gender?” The Tweet, and all replies to it, have since been deleted but it quickly made its way around the Internet and received a very mixed response.
While several found it to be nothing more than a harmless joke, stating that they’re “happy to see that the team has a sense of humor”, others found it to be tasteless and offensive, even accusing CD Projekt Red of transphobia and stating that they will no longer be purchasing the game when it comes out. Considering how much positive buzz has surrounded the title since its announcement at E3 this year (we even listed it as one of the best games of the event), this is a shocking swerve in the other direction, though it’s currently unknown whether this will have a drastic effect on sales.
CD Projekt Red has since issued an apology on the Cyberpunk 2077 account. It states “Sorry to all those offended by one of the responses sent out from our account earlier. Harming anyone was never our intention.” Though the apology hasn’t won everyone back over, with some deeming it a “fake apology,” there are still those that, while still taking umbrage with the joke, are excited for the game regardless.
In related news, developer Patrick Mills was interviewed about the title at Gamescom and went into detail about the side-quests and how similar they are to CD Projekt Red’s previous title The Witcher 3.
Cyberpunk 2077 will release on Xbox One, PS4, and PC though there is currently no release date.
